Perfect Lighting setup for crisp white Instagram photos
I like to keep things simple. All you need is 2-3 pieces of white board and a window!
- ~ Pick an area in your house with amazing window light.
So, let’s chat about what makes good window lighting. You want the light coming in from the window to be soft and even. Think of a cloudy day, where the sun is not peeking through but there is a beautiful even light throughout. Or if you walk up to your window and the light is blinding you or a lot of yellow is coming through, that is not the best light. Sometimes it’s all about timing. For myself and the direction my window is facing I know the best light is usually in the morning and when the sun is about to set at night. Usually light is at it’s strongest in the afternoon. That is usually the light you don’t want. But again it all depends on which direction you window is facing. Because I can also photograph at 2pm, so again it all depends.
- ~ With your two white boards you are going to create an L. As shown below. The foam boards help you bring the light back into what you are photographing. These are essential if you want a white bright image. Think of the layout like a square box. Your window is one side. The two white boards are two separate sides and the last side I leave open to photograph.
* side tip, to keep my foam boards up I use shoe boxes or vases. Really you can use anything heavy.
- ~Choose a white background. If you are going for the pure white look. You can use your third piece of white board. I utilize my white bed sheets a lot because I love for my images to have more of a lifestyle feel. I do alternate between that and the foam core.
And there you have it! This setup takes me seconds to setup and I always know I will have beautifully lit images. Stay tuned next week for the next part of the series on how to style OOTD images.
